The Griffin Inn was
situated on Redlam Brow. This pub was present by 1848 and was sold by
Thwaites Brewery to Blackburn with Darwen Council a few years ago subject to
a covenant that it would not be used for selling alcohol. The council have
now demolished it as part of a redevelopment scheme. |

My existence in America began at the
Griffin Inn . . .
My grandfather, Frederick Walsh, was born in 1878, and 19 years later, as a
way out of the cotton mills, he joined the Manchester Regiment. His
enlistment lasted eight years, including a year of besiegement at Ladysmsith
during the Boer War. In 1905, he returned to Blackburn to decide what to do
next . . . and "next" changed everything.
One evening at his local, The Griffin Inn, Grandpa sat in on a poker game
--Pontoon maybe— and won a good deal of money. The next day he bought
passage on a steamer headed for Boston, Massachusetts.
He had a friend in New Bedford and after surveying the scene and possibly
securing future employment, he returned to Blackburn to settle his affairs
and then headed back to America. |
