The Pelican was on Birley Street across from the Foster Yates and Thom
Factory and next door to the best chippy in Blackburn. It was only a small
pub (Duttons), the landlord and landlady from around 1962 were Ted and
Clara. They were brilliant hosts, a born duo who could make anyone laugh;
they left in 1968 mainly because the area was due to be demolished, this
happened in around late 1969 and gone was the Pelican and chippy ( and I
missed both).
Ted and Clara then took the Victoria in Darwen in July 1968, Ted died from
a heart attack in 1971, but Clara carried on running it untill 1973, she
then retired to Blackpool.
