Thwaites' Wellington Inn was situated at 57 Furthergate and is thought to
have been demolished in the late fifties when the surrounding houses were
demolished to make way for local authority ones which were built in about
1958 on a renamed Burnley Close with Burnley Road having been re-routed. |

What a brilliant picture but further to the above answers
the ‘Welly’ was only demolished two or three years ago, and the
undertakers was never there but next door. It was a listed building and
could only be demolished when it fell into disrepair and was deemed to be
unsafe. The council had wanted to knock it down for years to advance their
plans for a bus lane. (allegedly).
I was brought up in the area, and in the summer it was the busiest pub in
the area because the beer was always colder than any other pub in the area
(and there was quite a few) thanks to the deep cellar.
