The Cross Axes was situated on
Deansgate. Present by the 1770s, this pub was also known as The Crown &
Anchor. It closed in 1879 and was demolished to make way for an extension to
the Bank Of Bolton building next door. |

My family used to own a Manufacturing
Chemist in Bolton called WH Legat Ltd. The company was founded by a Mr
William Legat in 1880 and his premises were at 19, Deansgate Bolton. Today
in 2019 the premises are now used as a cafe. (My Grandfather went into
partnership with Mr Legat and later became owner and managing Director). In
order to help visitors find 19 Deansgate Mr Legat used The Cross Axes Inn by
way of a reference point, telling visitors that it was on the opposite side
of the road. Eventually the name 'Cross Axes" was adopted by WH Legat Ltd
and became its logo. |
