The Derby Arms was situated at 22 Churchgate.
This pub closed in 1963. |

In the 1960’s my late wife Carol’s) aunt and
uncle were the landlords of the Derby Arms. Next door was the Grand theatre
and some artists used to stay at the Derby arms when appearing there. Two
famous artists were Hilda Baker. (“She knows, you know”) and Ted Lune,
(early Army Game actor). My late wife’s parents used to help out in the bar
every Saturday night and their daughter, Carol, (later my wife) used to
‘baby sit’ Hilda Baker’s pet monkey when Hilda was on stage at the Grand
theatre. The derby Arms was a popular stop off and refreshing point after
hours for policemen on the beat in the area, entering and exiting by the
pubs back door.
Aunt and uncle (Olive and William Taylor) later left and took over the
running of the Post Office inn in Market Street, Farnworth, Bolton. |
