This was the first pub I ever went in, although I didn't know it at the time.
I was born in 1967, the last of seven children. My father didn't visit my mother in hospital, preffering to spend his time in the Springs with his mates. He worked as a maintenance fitter at Oldham Batteries, just next to the pub.
When my mother brought me home from the maternity unit in Ashton hospital, she had the taxi pull up outside the Springs and took me, days old, in there where she presented me to my father. She gave him a right mouthful about not visiting etc. much to the amusement of all present.
I'm later years I used this place myself, it was a sad day when they closed it down. Worse when it was demolished..
The barber down the street, Mike, managed to salvage the pub sign and kept it in his shop.
I've since moved away and have no idea if Mike is still working. He was an older man, used to booze with my Dad and may well have been in on the day of my first visit but he had no recollection when I asked him.
Pubs used to be communal generational. It's such a shame their time has gone.
