The Butchers Arms was situated at 201 Market Street,
next to the football ground which shares its name. Now demolished. |

I have very fond memories of the Butchers Arms, it was run by my brother
Gary Bolger until it closed in March 2010 after approximately 140
years. I'm proud to say I was the last customer served and the last drunk to
leave after all those years. |

We lived in Albert Street, directly
across the road from the Butchers Arms until we moved to Guernsey when I was
10 (that was 1962). It was my parents’ local and I used to run errands for
the licensee, Mrs Lynch. She was a lovely lady who always made us welcome.
As kids we used to try and sneak into the football ground without paying the
sixpence entry fee (2½p). |
