My relatives were Abel and Julia Vaughan and
were licensees in Liverpool. I have today found an entry in the Liverpool
Weekly Courier dated 02/11/1889.
In effect it states that Abel and Julia Vaughan were the licensees at the
Crown and Anchor on Scotland Road. In August 1889 a team from the Inland
Revenue came to Liverpool to identify an illicit still. The still was found
at 60 Back Roscommon Street and a consignment of illicit spirits was
followed to the Crown and Anchor pub. The still operator Henry Hayhurst
received 6 months in prison.
On 9th August the pub was raided. A barrel was found with a tin lining
(concealment) with 20 gallons in it. It had been taken to the pub and was
found almost empty but another barrel was found in the basement with 30
gallons in it. The duty was about 10 shillings a gallon and Abel Vaughan
said he'd bought the lot for £8.
Abel pleaded guilty and Julia not guilty. They were fined a total of £18. |
