Midway Hotel

The Midway Hotel was situated on Stockport Road. My grandfather was the licensee there in the early 1900s, and ran it with my grandmother, Edith Jenny Read. His name was Thomas Herbert Read, always known as Bert. He had been a professional footballer, playing for both Manchester City and Manchester United until a recurring knee injury stopped play, as it were.
In 1902, J H Davies, a wealthy Manchester brewer, had paid off the club's debts ( it was then called Newton Heath) and renamed it Man United. Eventually, when he was no longer able to play for the club, my grandfather took over into the Midway, one of mr Davies' pubs, I assume and which he ran successfully as far as I know.
It must've been a draw to have a retired footballer at the bar. Both Bert's children, Vera (my mother) and my uncle, also Bert, lived there.
