The Castle & Falcon was situated on
Bradshaw Street. This pub closed temporarily for the tram network
construction, however never reopened. |

The back room where the football table
was allegedly was called the Tudor room. According to the landlord it was
where people went to tudor butties. The bar had an old net hung from the
ceiling that was so old you didnt dare touch it. The gents according to
legend was about 8ft square but about 30ft high with one tiny window near
the top. It was previously something to do with monks then a police lock up
where they say the last woman hung in Manchester was kept. Another piece of
history gone to arty farty pubs that only outsiders want. |

A great pub on my regular visits to this
historic, but until more recently under developed, financially & development
wise.
When I drank there,it was a Burtonwood House not a Bass House as the
fantastic photo shows, not sure if did the stronger Bitter, but had Best
Bitter,on hand pump, and Top Hat keg. My last visit could see the encroaching
Metro development from Victoria,& I regret not recording on film, areas like
this,Greengate was one of my favourite areas, full of History & Industrial
grit. Plus some fine pubs Legs Of Man & The Shears (Wilson's House ?) Plus
just up Trinity Way at junction with Church Street Salford the Braziers
Arms,knew of the Lamp Oil Shop,or The Eagle,have been in,interior same,but
the atmosphere much more reserved, the Braziers was a Boddingtons House, when
Boddingtons was still a wonderful beer, often be at The Ducie Arms,Brewery
Tap as well. Have got to be grateful when a Pub,or old building of various
uses remains, but often that character & history ends with the changes. |

Best table football machine in Manchester. Used to work
at Co-op Bank just round the corner on Bradshaw St and went in the
Castle just about every lunchtime for over 2 years. Always drank draught
Guinness as Burtonwoods was hanging. Massive beef and onion butties.
Seem to remember landlord and lady were called Bert and Kate |
