From The Rochdale Observer, 1860
Sad Death On Christmas Day - Mr Molesworth, the coroner, held an inquest on Tuesday at the Bowling Green, Milnrow Road (the inquest afterwards being adjourned until the following day), on the body of John Holmes, living in Trafford Street, and who died on Monday from the result of injuries received in a fall downstairs on Christmas Day. Deceased, it seems, was secretary to a friendly society meeting every Sunday evening at the Dusty Miller, Sudden. He went to the house on Christmas night, shortly after five o'clock, remaining until between nine or ten. When he left the club room he was proceeding downstairs, carrying two quarto books, when he fell from the top of the stairs to the bottom. He was picked up insensible, and conveyed home. He never spoke afterwards, and died shortly before two o'clock on the following morning. The landlord, John Howard, swore that he did not think deceased had a quart of beer in the house, and he was sober when he left the room. A wound was found on his head, and blood issued from his ear. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
