My grandad, Frederick Robert Singleton-McGuire
was the landlord of this pub in 1899. It was formerly called The Grapes, and
opened in 1805, closing in 1905. He has an interesting history. He was born
in Wormgate in 1878. At the age of 3 he went to live with his uncle Michael
McGuire (who was the son of an Irish immigrant) while both his parents went
to live in Nottingham. He became Ice Skating champion of the Fens in the
days when the Witham froze over for days on end. In 1899 he married Margaret
Amelia Antrobus and became landlord of this pub where my father, Frederick
Michael McGuire, was born. My Grandad went on to manage the Axe and Cleaver
in West Street Boston. The initials of his two sons are still engraved in
the wall of the old coach house (F.McG and V McG) at the Axe and Cleaver. |
