Six Bells

The Six Bells was situated at 35 North Street. The publican in 1919 was Alphaeus Jeal. This 18th century grade-II listed building is now in retail use.

My uncle Joe Howson was landlord at this pub in the mid 1960s along with my auntie Pat. I’m fairly sure they had Barnsley Bitter in the pumps. Whether it was a Barnsley house, locals may be able to confirm. Why Barnsley would come out this far, not sure. I would be about eight when we used to visit and can remember playing bar billiards. My sister Judith stayed there and worked behind the bar for a while. I remember American servicemen frequenting the place, so there must have been a camp nearby. Uncle Joe was a strong fella and was famous for being able to tear a pack of cards in half. I remember watching him do it but don’t know if it was a trick or not!!!
