I have a memory, a rather eerie one, of
trying in vain to get a drink at the Marine Arms, Freiston Shore, on a May
day in 1958, shortly before it closed for good. I wondered at the time why
it seemed to have a large entrance all, with numerous closed doors leading
off, but I realise that this must at one time have been the reception area
for the hotel. Anyway, not a soul was about. I opened one of the doors -
again, not a soul in sight, though my memory is of a fire burning rather
badly in the grate. To all intents and purposes, the whole place was
deserted, though it still had all the outward appearance of being open for
business. Had it been a dark day in winter, it would have been more scary,
but since the sun was shining brightly, I abandoned the search for a drink
with light heart. |
