George Hotel

The George Hotel was situated at 21
High Street. The George Centre stands on the site of the old George Hotel,
once an impressive local hostelry built in 1780 and still retaining many of
its features. The north wing was added in 1923 then in 1990 the site was
converted into an indoor shopping centre, using the architectural splendour
of the former hotel, which is a Grade II* listed building. The Centre is now
managed by Jones Lang LaSalle Ltd. The George Inn was mentioned in "Nicholas
Nickleby" and the cellars may contain traces of a medieval inn. |
