The Springfield Arms was situated on
Springfield Road. |

I grew up opposite the pub. In my childhood it
was run by Jock and Geet (presumably Marguerite?). It was a busy pub. They
had coach parties calling at the weekends, wedding receptions in the
upstairs room and various local clubs used it for meetings etc. Grantham
folk club also met there for a time, I could hear them singing when the
windows were open in Summer. Jock and Geet put play equipment in the pub
yard which we were allowed to use when the pub was shut. They had a large
allotment type garden through a wooden fence which had a large strawberry
patch, I remember picking lots! This garden was sold off and houses built on
it in later years.
Years later the pub went through a bad patch and seemed to have become
lodgings as around 2016 my mother reported quite a few mattresses being left
outside on the front when the pub was cleared out.
I look on with interest to see what it's future will be. The new owner has a
good background in creating attractive homes so I'm sure she will succeed in
making the Springfield a lovely home. |
