Magpies Inn

The Magpies Inn was situated at 32 Waterside North. This pub was present by 1794. Upon closure in 1907 it became The Royal British Legion Club and is currently the Waterside Social Club.
 
Formerly the Magpies Inn (present by 1791) after which an early bridge over the river was named. At least 1820-1850 it was known as the three Magpies and was variously addressed in the 19th century as 3 or 9 Magpies Square, 31 or 32 Waterside North. For a period around 1911 it was British Brush Works. Mr Ruston and Mr Shuttleworth purchased it in 1913 to be used as St Swithins Parish Hall/Mission Room and Coffee Palace. 1940-1944 it was a NAAFI club and later returned to being a public house. It became the Royal British Legion Club 1956 and on 16th November 2001 the Riverside Social Club. It was converted to flats in 2003. Directory and census entries include; 1791 Thomas Moore; 1826-1852 George Rumble (1852 also chemist, high st.); 1851 Ann Rumble; 1855-1861 David Conlon (& brewer, maltster, wine & spirit merchant); 1867-1872 Henry Billyard (& family brewer & wine & spirit merchant); 1881 Eliza Bryn; 1885 William Murfin Cliff; 1889-1891 George Oliver James (& joiner - James & Reeve); 1892-1894 Arthur Longdon; 1896 Arthur Burniston; 1897 Charles Sims; 1900 William Brumby; 1901-1905 Alfred Richard Yates; 1911 Former public house uninhabited; 1913-1919 St Swithins Mission Room and Coffee Palace, (1919 caretaker Benjamin R Webber); 1965 British Legion Club.

On 12th August 1842 Caroline Holmes, single woman, of 13 Union Place was accused at Lincoln Quarter Sessions of stealing a sovereign from George Rumble, publican.
 

From The St Swithin's, Lincoln Parish Register:

Daniel Smith, a stranger from The Magpies Inn, Water-side was buried 15th February 1818 aged 36 years.
