The Prince Of Wales was situated on Eastgate. This pub closed in the 1960s and has now been demolished; a Morrisons supermarket stands on the site.

My uncle, Harry Dixon, and his wife Ivy ran the Prince of Wales for some years after the war. His mother lived in a little house up the lane bedside the pub. Harry had previously been garage foreman for my father, Fred Wright, proprietor of Wrights Bus Service located in the East Lincs Garage next door and then after the great snowfall of 1947 in Orme Lane. I remember the barrels were on racks behind the bar and I think there was sawdust on the tiled floor and spittoons. I have a recording of Ivy saying how she hated the pub. I think Harry retired when he was 70 and died at his 71st birthday party

My great grandfather George Bath took over the tenancy of the Prince of Wales prior to 1911. Unfortunately George died in 1911 and his wife Mary seems to have continued the tenancy. From what my mother (her grand daughter) told me she ran the pub quite strictly and wouldn’t allow swearing. George and Mary’s youngest son (Ernest Fred Bath) fought in the first world war and returned home to the Prince of Wales after being injured, where, presumably, he helped his mother to run the pub. Mary died in 1924 and Ernest seems to have continued the tenancy, and having married in 1927 continued to run the pub at least up to 1939 (where he is recorded as being the publican). I don’t know for how much longer he (or his wife) ran the pub but he died in 1949.
