Ship & Horns

The Ship & Horns was situated at 44 Eastgate. The premises are now used as a charity shop.  Publicans include: 1880s - 1902 James Hargrave, 1919 Edgar Kitching

The owner, James Hargrave, had the present building constructed in 1888 after demolishing the earlier one and his initials and date can be seen on the wall below the blind window, also, his name is carved above the side door in Little Eastgate. In the 1901 Mr Hargrave became seriously ill and his wife paid for the Queen’s physician to travel from London by train to attend her husband. He operated on the landlord on the big dining table in the pub, but Mr Hargrave died six months later. His wife subsequently sold the business in 1910.

I lived the first year of my life in the pub. My grandparents, Ivy and Herbert Dawson, were landlord and landlady until Herbert became sick and retired. Ivy died in 1941 I think.
