The Axe & Handsaw was situated on
Shivean Gate and is now used as a private house. This grade-II listed
pub was present by 1830 and owned by the Soulby, Son & Winch
brewery until 1951 when it was purchased by JW Green of Luton. |

My grandfather, also Robert Oldershaw was born
in the pub in 1888. He was the oldest of 10 children all of which were born
here up to 1910. His father Henry was the publican and part time shunter in
Moulton Station. There were some cottages the other side of Shivean Gate
directly opposite the pub (it was Silver Street up to the local council
badly renaming everywhere in the 1970’s and getting a lot wrong) which
belonged to my grandfather right up to them being condemned in the late
1950’s but have no idea how they came into possession. |
