The Old Engine was

in 1949. It closed on 19th October 1959; the last publicans being Eric and

This pub was sited at the crossroads where Engine Bank and
Daws Gate intersect. It came into existence as a beerhouse sometime in the
1840's, started by Thomas Newton and his wife Deborah née Eason. After
closure, the property was disused for a period of time, but then became a
private dwelling. Then, sadly, it was destroyed by fire in November
1980, and a bungalow, called 'The Engine', built on the site and still
there today. |
