Peacock Inn

The Peacock Inn was situated on the north side of Bridge Road, roughly midway between New Road and Allenby's Chase. It was built between 1851 and 1861and ceased to trade around 1985. It was demolished for new houses that are now known as Peacock Court. The inn had very low ceilings which made playing darts difficult if you were over 6ft tall as trajectory was a problem. The snug was typical of the type and had associated nicotine paint on its walls. It was an Elgood's tied house, the beer being an acquired taste for the younger user! The inn had a national reputation for the playing of quoits and had at least two clay quoits areas at the rear. I can remember national matches being played there although what national meant I'm not sure. Check out http://www.tradgames.org.uk/games/Quoits.htm
