The Chequers

The Chequers was adjacent to the
proposed route of the Spalding to Bourne railway, i.e. south of the eventual
route. The subsequent
change of plans for the railway must have been a financial disaster for the
pub. This pub has now been demolished. This railway connection goes some way
to explaining why The Chequers was built in an off-road location with no
proper driveway [approx 300 yards from a road] in an otherwise open field.
Access was by walking along the riverbank. The last landlord was Edward
Goodman, and It closed as a pub in 1934. Then sold by the brewery (Mowbray
of Grantham) to Charles Freestone, but subsequently demolished a short time
after. Publicans
include William Fisher in 1861, William
Gibbons in 1871, in 1881 Mrs Sarah Gibbons. |
