I'm transcribing my late father's
(Stephen - Steve - Ludlow) memoirs. He was brought up and worked in and
around Emneth, Elm and Tydd Gote until moving to Terrington St Clement the
end of WWII. The following paragraph may be of interest.
"But before I leave for my promotion I must tell you about my near miss from
being shot in the White Lion at Tydd Gote.
I was having a drink one night when an argument arose about the bolt action
of the Ross rifle and the Remington rifle, when Walt Machin, the landlord
and Home Guard sergeant stepped in. “I’ll settle it,” he said and fetched
his rifle from another room. On returning he pulled back the bolt and shot
it forward again. Before I could tell him it was loaded he was pointing the
rifle towards me, but luckily for me he was an old soldier and pointed it to
the ceiling before pulling the trigger. “Bang” it went and the 303 bullet
went through the ceiling and out through the roof. Poor old Walt! His lips
were moving for what seemed like two or three minutes but nothing came out.
I can tell you that finished the argument in a hurry." |
