Cowley Arms

The Cowley Arms was situated at 483 High Road. This pub was established by 1870 and was initially owned by Savill’s Brewery of Stratford, moving to Charrington’s when that brewery took over the Savill’s pubs in the 1920s.  It became a free house in around 2000 and passed through several name-changes including Faze II, Erosion and finally the Loaded Dog, the latter venture primarily a live music venue.  The pub closed in 2009.
This pub has now reopened as The Shepherds Inn, aimed at the local Lithuanian community.

I was born in the Cowley Arms in Stratford/Leytonstone in 1934. It was then operated by my grandparents: Arthur Andrew Rush and Lilian Maud Rush who are now buried in Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington.

The Shepherds Inn has now also closed.
