The Northumberland Arms was situated at
299 Barking Road. This pub was known as The Red House at time of closure in
2019. |

The pub dates back to 1860 when the
area was first built up. The first licensees were from Newcastle in
Northumberland so presumably that is how the pub got its name. In the late
19th century the Dock Workers Union used the upstairs meeting room which
lead to the pub being referred to as the Red House and this later became its
official name. When I first became aware of the pub in the 1980 it was
called the Red House and there was no trace of the Northumberland Arms name. |
