This pub was present by 1695 under the
name Cocke &
Oake. It had become the Coach & Horses by 1841, at which time it was owned
by Truman’s Brewery of Spitalfields. Truman’s retained the ownership but
leased the pub out, first to the Smith Garrett Brewery of Bow, and later to
the Whitbread Brewery. By the twentieth century, Truman’s were supplying
the pub with its own beers. In Victorian times the pub stood beside a now
long-lost cricket ground. Ownership passed to Scottish & Newcastle in 1995
and the pub entered a difficult trading period. Despite its prominent
position the pub kept failing and boards went up and came down on the widows
until final closure came in 2007. The pub is now looking to
be in poor condition and is fire-damaged. |
