The Gun was situated at 54 Bushfield Street.
This pub closed on February 20th 2015. It is due to be
demolished as part of the further redevelopment of Spitalfields. Prior to
the relocation of Spitalfields fruit and vegetable in the early 1990 the Gun
opened from 6am to 8am for the market staff. |

This pub has now been demolished and a
new incarnation of The Gun built and reopened on the site.
When Spitalfields Market was open
intil the mid 1990s the pub opened about 6 or 6:30 am for the market workers
so it was a haunt of mine when I did the night shift at the Post Office. Use
of the early morning licence ceased when the market moved to Temple Mills.
I did see a story that at the end of World War II a soldier came to the Gun
and said he had no money on him but if he could have a couple of pints on
credit he would leave his medals as security and come back the next day to
pay for the pints and get his medals back. Of course they never saw him
again. The medal were kept and displayed with a notice they would be
returned to the holder if he returned and paid for the beer. |
