The Blue Anchor was situated at 225 Mile End
Road.
This pub was present by 1839 and closed in around 1915. It sold the beers
of Chandlers Brewery. The premises are now in use as an opticians. |

I think my great-grandfather fought bare-knuckle bouts here in the mid to
late 1800’s. It might have been owned by relatives as well, but not sure
about that. |

My Grandfather, Charlie
Mitchell boxed at this Pub, 1878-1880. Mitchell often took on all-comers in
London and fought as many as four bouts in an evening at: Mickey Welch's
"White Bear" in Bermondsey; Bill Richardson's "Blue Anchor" in Shoreditch;
Ted Napper's "Five Ink Horns" in Shoreditch; Langham's "St. Giles Room" in
Leicester Square; and Joe Hadley's "The Bells" in East End |
