Earl Greys Castle was situated at 71 Vallance
Road.
This was quite a short-lived pub,
present by 1901 and effectively closed in 1926. Quaker philanthropist Mary
Hughes bought the pub in 1926 and renamed it the Dew
Drop Inn, converting it to ‘a place of rest and refreshment for the
homeless’. Trade Union meetings also took place here, as well as Sunday
services for the Christian Socialists. Mary Hughes remained here until
1941; the former pub was a
regular haunt of the Krays and is now in
private residential use. |
