Anchor & Hope

Date of photo: 1937

The Anchor & Hope was situated at 90 Duckett Street. This was a traditional, two bar, back street Watney’s house.  It was established by 1881 and closed in 1995, after the last two years under the name Arkwrights.  It is now a grocer’s store.

This pub was run by Mr Richard Moore, my grandfather, during the war until the early 1950’s. He had lost an arm in accident in the docks.

This building has now been demolished and replaced by flats.
