The Artichoke was situated at 91
Stepney Way, at the junction with Sidney Street.
This pub used to have a little
display of photographs relating to the Sidney Street siege, which took place on
the site of this building
in 1911. The pub closed in 2001 and has stood empty and increasingly
derelict ever since. |
|
The Old Artichoke, Stepney was featured in the 1967
documentary ‘The London Nobody Knows’, in which the actor James Mason
wanders round London. The Artichoke sequence included an interview with
legendary street entertainer Norman Norris and his friend Alan Young. Norman
was also filmed dancing in front of the pub. |

Pub was a great haunt for
locals,Used to go in there with my granddad when I was a kid. Great
memories proper knees up...East end style... was sad to see it close
down. Due to lack of drinkers in the area like sparrows we die
out. |
