The Australian Arms was situated at 18 Bigland Street. This pub started life in around 1851 (perhaps earlier).  It was a Courage pub when  it closed and was quickly gutted by fire in March 1989.

This pub has now been demolished and replaced by a supermarket.

Although the pub is closed the sign lives on in my shed in Australia (see photo below).

The pub has not been demolished, however massively remodelled.

In the 1960s I was a friend of a family (The Whiteheads) who ran the pub. Myself and the publicans children played behind the bar and in the cellars. Also on the top floor of the pub there was a full trainset layout with about ten different trains running around at the same time. We had hours of fun. My Dad used to drink in the pub at weekends. The landlady used to prepare roast potatoes on Sunday lunchtime and put them out on the bar (Saloon Bar only) for customers.
