The Britannia

The Britannia was situated at 44 Morris Street. This was a Watney’s pub and it was established by 1891.  In 1956 it was very much associated with the notorious Watney Street Gang.  Rival gangster Ronnie Kray was convicted and served three years in jail for GBH and firearms possession after walking into this pub and stabbing Watney Street Gang member Terry Martin with a bayonet, whilst the rest of the gang scarpered out of the back door.  In 1991, like many small, run-down pubs in the area, it was acquired by Belhaven and in 2005 it closed and was converted into a fast food outlet.

The Britannia was in my family for 100 years, from the late 19th century until 1983. See the newspaper clipping below.
