The Britannia was situated at 44 Morris Street.
This was a Watney’s pub and it was
established by 1891. In 1956 it was very much associated with the notorious
Watney Street Gang. Rival gangster Ronnie Kray was convicted and served
three years in jail for GBH and
firearms possession after walking into this pub and stabbing Watney Street
Gang member Terry Martin with a bayonet, whilst the rest of the gang
scarpered out of the back door. In 1991, like many small, run-down pubs in
the area, it was acquired by Belhaven and in 2005 it closed and was
converted into a fast food outlet. |

The Britannia was in my family for 100 years, from the late
19th century until 1983. See the newspaper clipping below. |

I would love to see some
pictures of the inside of this pub, if at all possible. |
