The City Of Paris was situated at
178 Old
Ford Road. This was a Truman’s Brewery pub,
present by 1825. Once an elaborate, high-Victorian pub, it was rebuilt in
very modest style in the 1960s or 1970s. In 2004 the name was changed to
Habanas Wine Bar and the pub
closed in 2008. |

Now used as an Indian
restaurant. |

Henry Whittingham (about to emigrate to
Australia) reports to his brother John (who has already left for Australia)
news of their local area, 29 August 1852: |
The Victoria Park looks very fair. The water
in the first park is being altered, & doubtless in a few years will add to
its beauty. The Pagoda has recently been gaily painted, but the Island is
still closed to the public, though the bridge is finished. I should think it
will be opened in the spring. Perhaps for the Band only, & its audience. The
Hospital for Diseases of the Chest is drawing near to completion, but I
suppose that it will not be opened till next spring. There is much building
going on by the City of Paris. The ground opposite is being cut into
streets, & houses are rapidly rising all over the ground. The same may soon
be said of Bishop Bonner’s Fields. At Old Ford, streets are springing up. I
take a walk occasionally, & always find some fresh buildings on each
occasion. It is curious to notice, & reflect upon. This rapid increase of
mammoth London. |
