Dover Castle

Site of The Dover Castle, 2014

The Dover Castle was situated at 118 Old Bethnal Green Road. This was a Truman’s Brewery pub and was present by 1866.  It closed in 2005 and was initially converted for use as a snooker club.  However  it had been demolished by 2006 and the site was subsequently developed with new flats.

Anthony Hatfull 1970s Early 1970`s was one of the best Saturday night/Sunday lunchtime spot`s. Live semi-pro` music, decent bar snacks, and lots of dolly birds in hot pants serving. It might have taken a while to get served, but nobody minded.
Chris Chetland (nee Britton) 1972 I used to be a DJ there, now live in South Africa since 1987.
Nicola Wood late 1960s / early 1970s My dad Mick Wood was the bar manager for publican Alfie Parsons. My mum (Denise Joseph) was a bar maid and her short skirts of the 60s definitely helped her get the job!
Lynda McDonald 1973/1974 I was a 19 year old traveling Australian working as a barmaid at this pub in 1973. A colorful clientele for sure. I only had to mention that I needed a winter coat and a rack-full was wheeled in the next day - fresh off the back of a lorry. Hahaha. Sunday sessions complete with great seafood nibbles across the bar. Oh those were the days.
