The Duke Of Wellington was situated at
52 Cyprus Street. This pub was built in 1850 or 1851 as
the centrepiece of the development of Cyprus Street. It was a Watney’s
Brewery pub and in the 1850s held a licence for music and dancing. Both of
my grandparents on my father’s side lived in Cyprus Street in the 1920s
before they were married, so I feel it likely they must have used this pub.
Unfortunately I never got around to
visiting it myself before it
closed in 2005. It has now been nicely restored for residential use. |
