The Fountain

The Fountain was situated at 123 Sceptre Road. This pub was demolished in 2013 with a block of flats built on the site (see photos below).
This was my families local from the 40's to the late 60's. I would often sit outside, on the tall wall to the right in the picture, with a lemonade and a packet of crisps. Listening to my nan singing on the stage. My mum and dad lived across the road at 22 Rogers estate. Between the pub, and our flat was a haulage company, Mason brothers, and we would always climb all over their lorries. There were always parties on a Saturday night at ours, and my dad and uncle Bert would carry a bench back from the pub to accommodate every one. The trip back would often take sometime, with my dad and Bert having to stop every 10 yards, due to being intoxicated. My Nan's funeral cortege stopped outside as a lovely gesture.
It's very sad to see all the places and buildings that I knew, now all gone.

Norma Rydon 1950 I was brought up in Sutton Dwellings shown in the picture with my mum and brother. Thefountain was our local. I would go in the off licence of the pub to buy a bottle of brown ale for my mum and the publican Pat run the pub with his wife all the years I lived their. We got bottle tops from their to decorate Go carts to make them look good.
