The Green Man was situated at 287 Cambridge
Heath Road. It is now split between a fish and chip shop
and another shop. |

This was one of the oldest pubs in the
area, having been established before 1750. It was rebuilt in 1885 and
featured much signage advertising the products of its owners, the Truman’s
Brewery, plus elaborate ironwork
around the entrances. Closure came in 2002 and the premises is now mostly
used as a hotel, with two retail outlets at the front. |

My parents took over the running of the
pub after Les and Ivy who were my uncle and aunt vacated it in about 1968, I
was ten years old. They went on to run the Jolly Sailor pub in Maldon essex,
which is still there today. My parents were Fred and Win Hughes. I remember
watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon on a t v in a room at the back
downstairs. We lived there until about August 1969. Basically the pub went
bust. My father died in December that year. Before moving to the Green man,
my parents ran the Turks Head in brick lane. |
