The Nags Head was situated at
324
Hackney Road. This was the oldest pub in the area,
probably established by 1703, certainly here by 1706, when this was a rural
location on the road to Hackney. By 1836 it was owned by West’s Brewery of
Hackney Road. It later passed to Combe & Co. Brewery and then on to Allied
Breweries. The pub was rebuilt in 1888 by Arthur W Saville. By 1983 it had
been briefly renamed the Hackney
Cab. The name changed again to Limes by
1986 and the pub had closed by 1991. It is now in retail use. |

l worked as a part-time barman in the Nag's Head from
about Sept. 1968 to Jan. 1969, also for a few weeks from Nov. to
Christmas 1970. lt was a rough shop, but l got on well with all the
customers. The basement was rumoured to be haunted. There was a rock
group on every night and sometimes a go-go dancer. Definitely a
no-frills bar. The landlord was a 6'4" ex marine commando called Terry
Hollingsworth. |
