The Imperial Crown was
situated at 50 St Leonards Street. This pub was present by 1841 and was
in an old building, although by the 1980s the ‘genuine beams’ in the Mock
Tudor interior were made of genuine plastic and recycled floor joists. It
was a Taylor Walker Brewery pub and had a nice set of brewery tiles on the
exterior to prove it – luckily some
of these
still survive. The pub closed in 2003 and has been converted to residential
use. |

Great local pub. Friday,
Saturday and Sunday evenings had a local comedian (Jimmy Fagg) who told
jokes and played tunes. He appeared in a Comedy Store film 'Eat the rich'.
Spent many a weekend there listening to the same routine.

Lived in Talwin St. Had my first pint at 15 in there. Played football in
the pub team. |
