The Queen Victoria was
situated at 1 Gillender Street.
This was a Charrington’s Brewery pub,
as can still be seen by surviving signage. It was here by 1869 and in 1983
was described as being a proper “Cockney
knees-up pub”.
By this time it had become a free house, and it closed in 2001 – probably a
victim of its rather unfortunate modern location where it had become the
sole property on the wrong side of a busy dual carriageway. Now in
private residential use, it still has the Charringtons insignia on the wall. |

Some of my friends were at City Of London Poly. Some
lived next to the pub. Fantastic atmosphere, nice landlord. Lots of good
times. |

I met with a lovely Irish family I
lied and told them I was older than I was but I had ran away from
Glasgow. I had so many good times with that family who owned the pub. |
