Ranelagh Arms

The Ranelagh Arms was situated at 599 Roman Road. This pub was probably built in 1855; it was certainly here by 1869.  It was tied to the Courage Brewery and survived until closure in 2000.  The premises now house a grocer’s store and off licence.

My name is William hodgson and I am 55 years old,the roman rd and side streets had ver 50 pubs at one time,Ithe Raleigh was my first pub to drink in when I was 16,pubs then were a learning experience growing up,everyone new each other and all age groups mixed, listening to the old boys talking about the war and old villains telling there storys, the roman was a typical working class tough area, but the community spirit was fantastic.you could buy anything under the table, fags clothes etc,but burglary from family homes was a definite no no,all pubs then had live music on Fridays and Saturdays, and the old school would be dressed up to the nines and dance all night, the old landlord when I first went in ,was the ex arsenal goalkeeper in the 30s,ted  plat a lovely man who kept us off the street, the pub was a proper charity pub helping oap,s at xmas and partys for local people for different reasons, great seafood on Sundays and bar snacks at other times, really feel sorry for the yongsters now,we learned so much about life through our local pubs, iknow the decline of the pub, working mens clubs etc,has been a well planned project for years,to stop the working man from being a collective against tyranny, devide and conquer, great memories though, miss them times Imentsly.

My grandparents were publicans here during the 2nd world war, my grandad ended up in the ceiling when the ambulance station was bombed behind the pub. Their names were James and Hilda High, they also ran The Basinghouse In shoreditch too
