The Rose & Crown was situated at 8 Stroudley Walk.
This pub was first built in the 1720s
as the Bowling
Green Inn. It looked over the village green
and pillory and, of course, the village bowling green – a little difficult
to envisage today, but it does perhaps explain the wide expanse of concrete
to the front of the pub in the photo. The pub was rebuilt in the second
part of the nineteenth century as the Rose
& Crown, this newer building more recently
gaining a Grade II-listing. It was a Taylor Walker Brewery pub. Very tatty
in its final days, the pub closed in 2007. Now used as a cash and carry
store. |
