The White House was situated at
Lea Fishery, Hackney Marshes.
This former pub was one of the few Clapton building which stood on the east
side of the River Lea. It was present by 1745 and was well-known by the
beginning of the nineteenth century for it subscription fishery – at a time
before the River Lea became polluted. It was owned by the Beresford family
pretty much throughout the nineteenth century, and until they sold up in
1897. By 1911 it had developed a bad reputation and the renewal of the
licence was refused following problems with late-night drinking. In these
latter days at least it sold the beers from the Benskin’s Brewery of
Watford. No new licensee could be found and the pub was demolished in 1913. |
