Black Bull

The Black Bull was situated at 217 Haggerston Road. This pub was present by 1819, when the licensee was Samson Hanbury, a member of the brewing dynasty which ensured that it became part of the estate of the Truman, Hanbury, Buxton Brewery of nearby Brick Lane.  A regular 1960s customer was Jack ‘The Hat’ McVitie, who no doubt made other customers a tad nervous after he allegedly ‘shot up the bar’ following a loss on the horses.  The pub closed in the late-1980s and was squatted for a while before being demolished in 1994, with flats built on the site.
