The Queen Elizabeth was situated at 9 Graham
Road. |

This pub was established by 1874 and was tied to the Charrington’s Brewery
of Mile End. It closed in 2005 and by 2007 had been converted to use as a
church. |

This was one of several pubs of which my great
grandfather Diederich Wetjen was licensee, back in the latter half of the
nineteenth century. Diederich died at the Queen Elizabeth on Christmas Day
1885. The pub was recently converted to residential use but is still called
the Q.E. and I believe that the old sign is undergoing restoration and will
be rehung on the building on completion. Somewhat anecdotal reports on the
“net“ claim that this particular pub was the inspiration for the “Queen Vic”
featured in the BBC East Enders series. |
