The Rose & Crown was situated at 13-15 Mare Street. The plaque above the door shows the name of a publication that was based here after it closed.

A pub called the Rose was present in Hackney Village by 1636, but this may have been further north than this pub which was certainly present as the Rose & Crown by 1752 when landlord Joseph Swaby was fined five shillings for allowing drinking and smoking in his premises on a Sunday.  By 1905 at least it was a Whitbread Brewery house, and some nice old Whitbread signage can still be seen on the building today.  By 1977 the pub was leased to Young’s Brewery of Wandsworth for a time, reverting to Whitbread by 1991.  In the 1990s it was well regarded for rather left-field live music and I remember seeing such musical luminaries as Spithead and the Tofu Love Frogs performing here.  The pub rather unexpectedly closed in 1995.

This was one of four pubs Youngs leased from Whitbread in Hackney. It was frequented by furniture workers from the last of Hackney’s furniture workshops, Cintique, by drivers from Empress coaches and printers from the Socialist Workers Party’s Feb Edge Litho printshop.
