The Bakers Arms was situated at 75 Northiam Street. The Crown Estate re-developed the area when the leases fell in in the 1970’s, 99 years after it created nearby Victoria Park and bought the land from the old Cass estate. Don’t remember it at all as we moved here in 1976. But we do know that the Bakers was often under surveillance by the police from the old houses opposite and Charlie Kray’s (ghosted) autobiography says it was where the twins tape recorded a corrupt copper so’s they could blackmail him.

I have very fond memories of The Baker's Arms in Northiam St. I was a student at Sir John Cass College and lived in a colege hostel on Victoria Park Road. We students from the hostel make the Baker's Arms our local. We were a bunch of 19 year old and the local were a very tough bunch of guys indeed. We had an uneasy existence with them But they left us alone - by and large. I remember the FA Cup Final of 1970 which we watched on TV in the Baker's. Leeds v. Chelsea. There were quite a few Yorkshiremen amongst us students, and the locals, of course, wanted Chelsea to win. I spent an hour and a half cheering for Leeds under my breath. Itw as agony when Leeds scored and the tough guys were staring at us ....daring us to cheer.
