Thirty Nine Steps

The Thirty Nine Steps was situated at 171 Well Street.
Initially known as Two Black Boys, this pub was present by 1732 when landlord James Matchin was fined five shillings for opening on a Sunday.  By the end of the eighteenth century the pub was owned by the William Cator & Co Brewery of Old Street, London.  It was just an alehouse at this time, but seems to have been demolished in around 1799 and rebuilt in grander style.  By 1888, the pub was tied to Watney’s Brewery, who kept it throughout the twentieth century.  In around 1990 the pub was renamed the Claddagh and then later was again renamed the Thirty Nine Steps.  It closed and was demolished in 2004. A block of flats, called Bernie Grant House, were subsequently built on the site.
